Environment care of machine and mask. So clean is too expensive, if it works

How is the best, health wise, method of cleaning and sterilizing the unit. Any ideas?

I have been using a CPAP machine for 5 years and had a sleep test, prescription, etc. I have a wonderful guy at the local med supply place. He uses a CPAP as well and knows the machines backwards and forwards. He said So Clean is bunk. You only need to clean the inside of the machine once a year and the med supply does that for free. The only things you need to do are replace the filters (every 2 weeks for mine), rinse the hose and wash the nose pillow. I use soap and water on the nose pillow once or twice a week. (I don't have a mask, but I imagine I would do the same with a mask.) The hose I rinse with tap water because it has chlorine and kills germs. Air dry.
He said it's a waste of money to get the So Clean.
